Avery
County was created in 1911
from portions of Mitchell, Watauga,
and Caldwell Counties. It is named for Waightstill Avery (1745
- 1821) who was
a Colonel in the Revolutionary War, a member of the North Carolina
State
Legislature, and served as North Carolina Attorney General.
