GREENEVILLE, TN – June 12, 2009 – The Greene
County Partnership announced today that furniture manufacturer SouthCo
Inc. has relocated the assembly portion of its business from Del
Rio to Greeneville and is now operating in a 100,000 square foot
warehouse.
SouthCo specializes in the fabrication, assembly,
sales and delivery of durably, yet attractive customized furniture
to the college market in the United States. The company’s
peak season is rapidly approaching, and company owner Norm Clark
expects to have 100 to 110 employees hired and working in the near
future. Approximately 90% of the work force will be hired locally
with most being needed in light assembly of the furniture.
Greene County Partnership President Randy Harrell
said that the relocation of SouthCo to Greeneville would be a very
positive influence. “We have a 15.4 percent unemployment rate,
and if they’re going to hire, it’ll definitely get that
rate down,” Harrell said. “They’re a great company.
I met them at the site and showed them the building,” Harrell
said, adding that he did not solicit the business from a contiguous
county, something that would be frowned upon.
The company currently has a dozen employees working
in the Greeneville facility. SouthCo also employs regional sales
representatives throughout the U.S.
“This is a great opportunity for us. We had
an opportunity to acquire this facility and we’re glad to
be in Greeneville,” Clark said. The company began moving into
the building at the beginning of June.
SouthCo works within a niche market in the furniture
business – designing, producing and selling dormitory furniture
to colleges in the United States.
